We’re very gratified by the strong response to the September newsletter.
We are always grateful to hear from our long-time supporter of The Old Guard Todd Trimmer ’69. Todd and Annie (Wyrick) Trimmer (Annie was Pike Dream Girl in 1970) live in Marietta, Georgia. Todd sent a check for $200 “to combine my 2024 and 2025 donations in one mailing.” Todd wrote a letter with reminiscences of friends from chapter days.“I thought it would be nice to catch you up on our life since (you and Aaron Beam ‘68) were so instrumental during my college days. How many trips did you mask to my dorm room when I was a freshman? If it hadn’t been for PiKA I probably wouldn’t have met Annie. We celebrated 50 years of marriage this past June. And I never would have met Fred Buhl ’69 (who told me to get out of Army ROTC and join the Air Firce to become a pilot). I listened, and spent 6 years in the Air Force and 25 years with Delta before retiring in 2004. Annie and I had game packages in The Champions Club where we saw Wayne and Kathy Johnson ’72 until they moved to North Carolina. We’ve talked about moving down your way but right now our son (FSU Class of ’10) lives only 30 minutes away and his wife is ill, so we will stay here a while. He works at a country club; our daughter (FSU Class of ’05) lives in Clinton, Mississippi where she teaches 1st grade. We visit often. The Boosters have two great guys (Bo and Chris) up here in Atlanta. We love both of them, and they guided us to join The Bowden Society. Annie is just arriving home – very gingerly. She has six fractured vertebrae in her back from chronic osteoporosis. She had to give up teaching her aerobics class, but she runs a county Glee Club, so she keeps busy. I got a new titanium shoulder last year, but otherwise I am in great health. We’ve been invited to sit in the President’s Box for the November 2nd game vs. N. C. State. We’ll stay Bainbridge overnight because I refuse to pay what they’re asking for hotels in Tallahassee! We’ll do the Bainbridge Shuttle. I hope to connect with other Brothers. Chapter Advisor John Peacock ’01 announced that a small group of alumni have raised $6,000 to underwrite the cost of sending our chapter officers to Memphis for the Leadership Conferences. John wrote to SMC Lucas Bozeman, “I’m pleased to share that several of our dedicated alumni have generously donated to help offset the costs of sending our chapter leadership to Pike University. Their support speaks volumes about their commitment to and belief in the future of our chapter… The alumni’s generosity reinforces our shared goal of building a strong foundation for future success. We are confident that the lessons learned at Pike University will allow our members to become even better Pikes, dedicated to the values and leadership principles that define our organization. In other Chapter news, Delta Lambda began their defense of the 2023-24 Overall IM Trophy from by winning 3x3 Basketball this September. Two of our men are currently competing for Sorority Man of the Year honors.
Former Seminole quarterback Jordan Travis ’22 congratulates current quarterback Brock Glenn ’24 on his first start of the year vs. Clemson. Kelly Lowrey ’80 would be proud.
Brock is one of five Delta Lambda Pikes on the team this fall, including punter Alex Mastromanno ‘20, kicker Ryan Fitzgerald ’19, defensive back Dylan (Harold) Stubbs ’23 and freshman kicking sensation Jake Weinberg ’24.
New pledges rode the firetruck up and down sorority row, visiting houses and introducing themselves. Rudy Rowe ’87 (behind the wheel) is the only one ever allowed to drive the beast.
Delta Lambda Sires & Sons
The sons of twins Stephen MacDonald ’85 and Michael MacDonald ’85 have followed in their fathers’ footsteps to become Pikes at Florida State. They are Christian MacDonald ’23 and Noah MacDonald ’24. With them is the founder of our Delta Lambda Legacy Dads, Doug Russell ’79.
Current Delta Lambda Risk Manager Andres Aceituno ’20 is excited to demonstrate FSU’s new $100,000 flight simulator. He is joined by our own former chapter advisor Joe Feheley ‘81 (Lt. Col. Retired). Joe “graciously took time to speak to the ROTC cadets, sharing his experiences as an F-16 instructor pilot in Homestead.”
In the middle is ROTC Detachment Commander Col. Kevin Ogle. Andres says, “I had the privilege to assist in a small way as Col Ogle and others led the acquisition of the FAA-certified advanced RedBird Flight Simulator for FSU. [This] is a game changer, providing ROTC Cadets with hands-on experience to hone their skills for future careers in aviation.”
Here’s ‘the rest of the story’ as they say. Coach Bowden established a friendship with Dabo back when Tommy Bowden was Head Coach of the Tigers. But they also had another tie, a Fraternal that went beyond coaching.
Bobby Bowden ’49 (Samford) was team quarterback and captain, and SMC of Alpha Pi Chapter. William “Dabo” Christopher Swinney ’89 was initiated into Pi Kappa Alpha’s Gamma Alpha Chapter at the University of Alabama during his playing days for the Crimson Tide.
John Stoner began selling insurance for Jefferson Standard in the early 1960s. In the span of six decades, he and his family grew that business into The Stoner Organization, now one of Florida’s most prominent and influential insurance institutions, specializing in employee benefits. John recently discovered an old document while searching of long-ago photos. It is titled, “Annual Meeting of the Jefferson Standard Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha - 1967” It is very much in the same vein as the weekly updates from 1963 through 1967. With John’s permission, here is an edited reproduction of the “Minutes” of the 1967 meeting.
This year’s meeting was called to order on the turf of Florida Field following the Seminoles’ 21-16 victory over the gators in Gainesville. J.L. Milton ’62, past SMC and presently 1st Lt in charge of the Medical Section at McCroy AFB is Presiding. IMC is Bob Stoner ‘64, General Telephone’s next President. Secretary is Jack McMullen ’64 who had to squeeze time out from his General Manger job (Jenne Fixture Co.) to fly his private Lear Jet down from Charlotte. Treasurer is John Walker ‘63, rising young CPA from Miami, who replaced Jim Cobb ’63 since Jim decided to take up Dentistry.
Due to the excessive debating we’ve had to put up with at recent meetings, Ed Blanton ‘64, the Perry Mason of FSU Law School, is now appointed Sergeant-at-Arms and interpreter of Milton’s Rules of order.
The first item in Old Business is the age-old question: should we inform the Air Force that Lewis DeLaura ’64 won the White Glove Award once, but deserved it three years in a row? Lewis is presently U.S. Ambassador to the Far East. Bruce Cannon ’64 serves as Ambassador to the Middle East, and our North African Ambassador was Frank Loeser ’64 who has since resigned as Commander of the Armed Forces Staff College.
The meeting was briefly interrupted for a 10-minute Air Show during which two members of The Blue Angels – Barry Drossner ’63 and Grant Franzel ’66 – offered a spectacular display of air power. As usual, Barry had to go to the toilet 10 times before he calmed down enough to fly.
The first item under New Business was to decide whether we want to boycott Steve Bogan’s ’66 flower sales this Homecoming. Points in favor of boycotting were, 1) Steve did not donate a flower arrangement at Copper’s funeral. This really hurt Gomer’s (Van Williams ’64) almost to the point where Van was going to cut off his valuables and be buried with Copper, and, 2) Russ Burnett ’65 was planning to steal 200 flowers and share them with his hippy friends. It might also be mentioned that while John Walker ’63, Sandy King ’63 and Burnett were high on pot at Homecoming, Walker told the hotel manager (to his face) that he looked like a frog.
The second item of New Business was whether Don Bryan ‘63, St Petersburg’s #1 sports coach, could bring his first-string basketball team to scrimmage PiKA’s team. It looks as if PiKA might be tough in basketball this year. Phil McCool ’64 (yes, he really got a little in his ’68 Corvette) at Center; Ed Garrison ’65 (Claude Kirk’s firsthand security guard) at Forward; Dave Lyons ’65 (the lover who pinned two girls at one time) at Forward; Rocco Montano ’64 (the man of few words and even less action) at Guard; Van Williams ’63 (Barry’s old roommate and secret lover) at Guard.
Questions subject to debate included:1. Was Paul Donovan ’65 home the night [name redacted; known throughout the brotherhood as “Hose Nose”] spent the night at Jack’s place, or was he studying at the library.2. Will Dave Frew ’67 ever beat Wayne Currie ’66 in a track meet? Will anyone?3. Will Bob Gleason ’66 ever make President at Southern Bell, or will he continue to play around with his operators?4. Does Ken Jensen ’65 really have a chance with any girls in Birmingham, or does Hubert (Green ’65) have a jinx on that?5. Will Mack McKinnon ’65, Stetson’s #1 Law student, ever forget his college sweetheart? You know who, Mack.6. Does Dave Orr ‘63 still check the closets every time Dave Frew ‘67 is at a party?7. How does Bob Tunkel ’66 really feel about having Randy (the White Glove Man) Wilson ‘65 in the same room with him?

Clarence Eugene Halley ’67 entered Chapter Eternal on July 4, 2023. There, he was re-united with his son Josh Halley ’01 who had previously entered Chapter Eternal in 2015.Charlie Barnes ’65 writes, “Past SMC Mike Ripingill ’65, and Gene Halley and I all graduated from Leon High School together. Mike and I entered FSU right away; I think Gene went the junior college route before arriving here in 1966.
“Each of us was commissioned as an Army 2nd Lieutenant, and all went to Vietnam about the same time. Mike was an Artillery officer; Gene was in Intelligence. Both Mike and Gene were combat decorated heroes of that awful war.
Gene was so proud when his son Caleb became a 2001 Re-Founding member of Delta Lambda. At the same time, Caleb was chosen to ride Renegade as Chief Osceola, a role he reprised for four years. Till the end of his life, Gene Halley remained a loyal member of the Renegade Team despite Caleb’s tragic death in 2015.
In 1972, he was hired as a Special Agent for the FBI and was one of the first to serve in the FBI undercover program. He traveled extensively throughout the United States on special assignments including task forces for serial killers and kidnapping cases.
Gene was always loyal to Delta Lambda, and served the Chapter at Sergeant-at-Arms.Dick Klunk ‘67: “I remember Gene well. Great guy. He was on the 3rd floor with (Dave) Giordano ‘65, (Charlie) O’Neil ’68 and (Vince) Favarato ‘67. A criminology major. When we had a spring beach party at Alligator Point we double dated. I had a blind date and her attention was on Gene. He brought a guitar and his singing did the trick. Prayers and condolences to his family.”
Billy Raymond ’79 wrote on October 7th ,”Dear Brothers please keep in your thoughts and prayers of our brother Charles " Chuck" Pistole who according to his close friend will pass away this week; he's in hospice in North Pinellas County. I had many a fun time on his boat, the “Wake & Bake" you know, waves & sunburn he explained, ha ha.”
Doug Sullivan ’77 added, “Very sorry to hear. Great memories with Chuck back in our FSU Pike days, ‘76 - ‘79. We called him Pistele’ ( like Pele’) for his soccer skills!
Jerry Sexton ’74 commented, “Always a smile and a joke with Chuck. Very sorry to hear this. Had a great time playing soccer with him in fraternity intramurals. Chuck was also a member of the FSU Intercollegiate soccer team. Prayers are with him and his family.
David Mims ‘71
David’s pledge brother Joel Padgett ’71 writes, “David was from Titusville. He and Steve Roden ’71, Jay Ginn’71 and I all roomed together at Prince Manor our first year.”David’s obituary was written by his son. “My father passed away October 8th . A kinder, more loving person the world has rarely known.”Memorial service will be held November 1st at Volusia Memorial.
