Join the Old Guard of Delta Lambda!

Contributions to the Old Guard may be made by credit card through this secure link, or, if you prefer to send a check, please make payable to The Old Guard of Delta Lambda and send to Charlie Barnes / 1490 Saint Charles Place / Tallahassee, FL 32308
We were delighted and astonished at the speed of former Delta Lambda Vice president, and Varsity swimmer, Mike Halfacre ’85 mhalfacre@me.com in expressing his support and loyalty to the Pikes of Florida State. Published Chris Dietz ’87 sent the September newsletter out 2:20 PM, and Mike’s contribution to The Old Guard was clocked in less than 10 minutes later at 2:29 PM.
Mike’s Wikipedia page says this: “Michael I. Halfacre is an American lawyer and Republican Party politician from New Jersey. A former congressional candidate, mayor of the Borough of Fair Haven, New Jersey, and Director of the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control within the Office of the Attorney General in the state's Department of Law and Public Safety.”
We are grateful for the generosity of all alumni who support Delta Lambda by contributing to The Old Guard.

UNDERGRADUATE NEWS

“As of mid-October, our IM football, soccer and tennis teams are currently undefeated, and our 3x3 basketball team won the Championship.”

ALUMNI NEWS
At the most recent Monthly Luncheon, Andy Miller ’70 ramsr2713@gmail.com announced that the Legends Campaign steering committee will be looking toward a major Founder’s Day Weekend in March….Peter Singhal ’15 peter.t.singhal@gmail.com writes, “I must apologize for being so poor at keeping in touch. I made my first trip back to Tallahassee since 2019. The Miami loss was disappointing but it was still an excellent weekend reminiscing on good times and fond memories. I was even able to stop by the Pike House before the game, and it was great to see the place is still running so well….The mystery of who owns the PKA73 license plate has been resolved. Jimmy Keen ’73 jimmykeen@comcast.net says, “Yes, that’s my truck. I was at the hospital for a tune-up. I’ve had that license plate since 2014”….Former Student Body President Patrick Suillivan ’01 pcs4498@gmail.com has made the promotion list to full Colonel in the Marine Corps. Patrick says, “I made the confirmation list, but there are still a few good Marines ahead of me before I’m officially promoted”. Responding to the new display in the Legends Room of all Pike campus leaders since 2000, Patrick says, “Brings back great memories and reminds me of how special the Delta Lambda brotherhood is. Thankful to be counted among (and still connected with) so many phenomenal leaders!”….Randy Parker ’70 rparker4500@gmail.com stays in touch with many Brothers from back in the day, most recently Mett Morgan ’70 j.mettmorgan@gmail.com and Bob Gatchel ’71. Randy was sharing photos of the infamous ‘Holiday Cruiser’ which was raised from the depths and then somehow caught fire in the vacant lot across from the Wildwood house in 1971. “Gatch went on to become a VP at Lockheed Martin in Accounting. He’s got a place in New Smyrna Bch on water and his current “Holiday Cruiser” is a 34’ Scout a very nice boat, according to Mett ….Randy also mentioned, “Gale and I went to the game last week and were impressed with the stadium upgrades. Hope they will continue to improve. By the way, Jordan Rigsby ’05 is my dentist and a super guy. Jordan told me he lived in new Pike house for 1 semester and quickly realized he wouldn’t reach his Dental School goal if he stayed there. We chuckled at that.”….Former State Senator, lobbyist and author Bob McKnight ’62 bob@flpoliticalcommentary.com has developed a screenplay for a TV series about Florida political intrigue. “I’d like you to know how responsive Brother Ray Marchant ’81 ray@marchantTV.com has been to me. He is pretty backed up with his film work but is taking the time to look at it with one of his Producers (Titanic and Avatar). He is very proud of his association with Delta Lambda Brothers. Thank you. Phi Phi.”

Tailgating Before the Miami Game.

Joe Fheley said “We should have taken the picture way earlier as we had many more Brothers at the tailgate. Scott Jones’ wife Molly took the photo.

Several alumni have mentioned they’d enjoy having copies of the last several issues of Pikes Illustrated. We’d be glad to mail you a copy on request. Send your mailing address to Charlie Barnes cbarnes161@comcast.net COVID caused us to miss one year; finances caused another break in the sequence. The issue above in the middle says ‘Fall 2024’ but actually covers the 2024-25 school year.
The Fall 2024 cover features All-American left-handed pitcher Jamie Arnold ’22. Jamie’s father is a Pike Legacy Dad. Jimmy Arnold ’92 was initiated at Central Florida. Jamie was drafted by the Oakland Athletics with the 11th overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.
The Fall 2021 cover features five young Delta Lambda Brothers in military service. Still undergraduates at the time, they are, from left: 2nd Lt. Daniel Woodard ‘20, USAF; Corporal Brandon Edmonston ‘20, USMC; FSU Student Body President C/4C Jonathan Levin ‘18, Pilot Select, USAF; A1C Finley Underhill ‘19, USAF; 2nd Lt. Austin Guarino ‘18, USAF
The Fall 2022 cover features PGA standout and former All-American Daniel Berger ’12 along with PGA rookie and All-American Cole Anderson ’19. Cole was also a four-time All-ACC Academic Honor Roll scholar.

Pittsburgh Football Weekend was disappointing on the field, but Pike Brotherhood prevailed on the links: Thursday at Seminole Legacy; Friday at Golden Eagle. From left: Joe Liguori ‘81, Paul Fontana ’79, Mark Gambill ‘81, Steve Smith ’78, Allen O’Brien ‘79, Mickey Fernandez ‘77, Brent Sembler ‘78, Doug Russell ‘79, SMC Owen Murtagh ’22.
Jimmy Graganella ‘14 and Nick Graganella ‘12 also played but are not pictured.
AD ASTRA

Kyle Steinke ’01 wrote, “We lost a good one; not sure there are many dudes like Vetzel out there. Had some great times at FSU in that ragged old house, Sweet Shop sketchiness, and when he ran one of those hayride places. Jay had a brilliant mind, was always there to back-up his friends, and had a positive outlook that made the world a better place. I’d be proud if my sons grow up and are known to be as good of a man as Vetzel was. Pray for his family, he will be greatly missed.”
Sunshine Region President and former SMC Eric Carr ‘01 wrote, “I am very sorry to pass along the devastating news that we lost Jason Vetzel '01 on Friday night to a heart attack.
In 2000, Jason was selected by Memorial Headquarters expansion consultants to be the Colony's first rush chairman. He did a spectacular job and was adored by all. Jason was instrumental in the Colony's success early on and thereafter.
Jason had a son, and was a tremendous father. He was a very smart, very talented engineer and worked for NASA among others. Most recently, he was working on a big job in Nebraska during the weeks, and commuting back to his hometown of New Port Richey, FL, on weekends.
Jason’s obituary excerpt: “Jay was born September 21, 1978, in Dunedin. He graduated from Gulf High School in New Port Richey, Florida and Florida State University, receiving his degree in Physics and Chemical Science. Jay worked for Reliable Horsepower (Industrial Irrigation) in Hastings. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and diving. He loved spending time with his family, especially at the family cabin.”
