Preserving our Legacy; Securing the Future
The Old Guard is Delta Lambda’s Alumni Annual Fund. Your gift goes toward strengthening the Bonds among alumni, enriching both the alumni and undergraduate Delta Lambda experience. Volunteer dues are $100 or more annually. Some Alumni choose to give more. These funds underwrite special projects like the Military Plaque, the monthly e-newsletter, the Delta Lambda website, monthly meetings with Alumni Advisors and Chapter officers, alumni reunions and more.
Please use the secure link above, or the link on the Delta Lambda Website. Or, some donors prefer to write checks. Please make payable to The Old Guard, and send to Charlie Barnes, 1490 Saint Charles Place, Tallahassee Florida, 32308

OUR CHAPTER WEBSITE IS WWW.DELTALAMBDAPIKES.COM

Alumni Advisors present included Ed Barnes ’71, Brett Fisher ’05, Pete Ford ’14, Jimmy Keen ‘73, Mike Lait ’78, Bob McKnight ’62, Andy Miller ’70, Jeff Moore ‘81, Dylan Nielander ’15, Chapter Advisor John Peacock ’01, Doug Russell ’79, Co-Advisor Steve Walker ’81, Charlie Barnes ’65.
Chapter Officers included SMC Lucas Bozeman, EVP Carlos Baldor ’21, IVP Owen Murtaugh ’22, Treasurer Alex Ward ’21, Pledge Educator Brian Lensengrav ’22, Ben Porter ’21.
The order of the day was good news all around. An enthusiastic group of Pike alumni and undergrad officers met at Madison Social in College Town (our new venue after the old University Center Club permanently closed).
Jimmy Keen and Pete Ford gave an overview of the $100,000 worth of improvements to the house, which were accomplished during the summer “Turn” just prior to occupancy this fall. “The house has been painted throughout, and house walls will be further decorated with framed composites and historical memorabilia to underscore the Delta Lambda traditions.” Keen and Ford gave special praise to House Manager Carson Marcil ’21 for his exceptional work preparing the house for fall occupancy.
Chapter Advisor John Peacock noted that Heritage Grove’s management is restoring many of the original features. “The community swimming pool is operating now.” The pool is conveniently located directly behind the Pike house.
SMC Lucas Bozeman reported that summer rush is strong. “Trevor Vogel ’22 is exemplary. Formal rush isn’t until September 10, but we already have over 60 ‘pre-bids’, including members of the varsity football, baseball and basketball teams.” He introduced new Pledge Educator Brian Lensengrav. Lucas also noted that he and Carlos Baldor and Alex Ward all attended the 2024 Pike National Convention in Oklahoma City.
Treasurer Alex Ward presented the welcome financial news. “We raised the dues from $1,300 to $1,500, but our city utilities, Memphis (National Pike) and IFC are all paid off!”
Finally, IVP Owen Murtaugh confirmed that Pikes won “all five Sorority-Men-of-the-Year competitions in which we competed. Last year, the chapter raised more than $80,000 for various philanthropies.”
EVP Carlos Baldor proposed an auction the weekend of the UF game to provide financial aid to our own Pike Brothers in need.
Our next meeting with be Wednesday, October 2nd at Madison Social in College Town.

An August 2nd feature in the Wall Street Journal called Bob Bowman ’85, “the most successful coach in the history of U.S. Swimming.” Bob was one of 17 Delta Lambda Brothers who populated FSU’s Varsity Swimming team from 1981 through 1986, including six Team Captains in a row.

The Scalphunters were a Seminole Men’s spirit group founded in 1978 as a sponsored organization of Seminole Boosters, Inc. The original group consisted of selected individuals from PiKA, Lambda Chi, Theta Chi, SAE, KA and Phi Delt. Five of the original 12 Founders were Pikes: Jim Floyd ‘76, John Leavitt ’77 (brother, Jim Leavitt ’79), Steve Shambach ’76 (son, Brett Sambach ’07), Tom Dzein ’76, and Todd Vargo ’76 (son, Austin Vargo ’09).
Leavitt and Dzein served Delta Lambda as SMC. Jim Floyd was Pike Treasurer, and was the first President of Scalphunters. The vests were original authentic garments provided by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Scalphunters met in the old railroad car owned by Seminole Boosters, and travelled to away games with the goal of promoting student spirit. Eventually, a companion organization for Women called Daughters of the Sun was created.
Scalphunters first introduced the Seminole War Chant to a student pep rally in 1984 (although the original War Chant was inspired by a Theta Chi named Rob Hill). The Scalphunters grew very quickly and became an influential organization, selecting the top men in many of the top fraternities into membership. The organization evolved over time, and may not be the same bright engine of enthusiasm today that it was 45 years ago. But for decades Scalphunters was undoubtedly the most prestigious interfraternity club at FSU.
